2018 V Scholar Dr. Ami Bhatt is a physician scientist at Stanford University who studies the organisms that live inside our bodies, especially in the gut and mouth. While invisible to us, these microbes play a powerful role in shaping human health and disease, including cancer. Her research explores how microbes communicate with each other and with our own cells. By decoding these biological conversations, Dr. Bhatt’s team has uncovered new molecular tools and innovative ways to edit DNA that could eventually lead to new treatments for patients.
Dr. Bhatt is also committed to expanding cancer care globally. She co-founded the nonprofit Global Oncology, which helped establish the first public oncology clinic in Belize and continues to support cancer care in underserved communities. Her work shows how studying the smallest forms of life can unlock big ideas for improving human health.
