Robert Canter, M.D.

2021 Translational grantee Dr. Robert Canter is a surgical oncologist at UC Davis who is working to develop new immune based treatments for sarcoma, a rare and often aggressive group of cancers that arise in bone and soft tissue. His research focuses on natural killer cells, a type of immune cell that acts as one of the body’s first lines of defense against cancer. Dr. Canter is studying how to guide these powerful immune cells into tumors so they can recognize and destroy cancer more effectively.

A unique part of his work involves studying naturally occurring sarcomas in dogs. Because these cancers closely resemble human disease, research in canine patients can help accelerate the development of new therapies for both dogs and people. This approach, known as comparative oncology, is helping bring promising new treatments to patients facing difficult cancers.
